Observed Auroral Ovals Secular Variation Inferred from Auroral Boundary Data

چکیده

We analyze the auroral boundary corrected geomagnetic latitude provided by Auroral Boundary Index (ABI) database to estimate long-term changes of core origin in area enclosed this during 1983–2016. design a four-step filtering process minimize solar contribution temporal variation for northern and southern hemispheres. This includes activity effects, removal high-frequency signal, additional ~20–30-year dominant periodicity. Comparison our results with secular change plus polar cap areas obtained using simple model magnetosphere field reveals decent agreement, increase/decrease southern/northern hemisphere respectively both observations model. encouraging agreement provides observational evidence surprising recent decrease zone area.

Auroral boundary correlations between UVI and DMSP

[1] Equatorward and poleward auroral boundaries from latitude profiles of Polar Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) auroral images were correlated with over 23,000 boundaries derived from 2 years of Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) electron precipitation data. Latitude differences between DMSP and UVI boundaries were averaged into 1-hour and 3-hour sectors of magnetic local time (MLT). The ...

Evidence in the Auroral Record for Secular Solar Variability

The historical record of aurorae is continuous and usefully dense for at least the last 2000 years. Revival of interest in the secular variability in solar activity motivates a review of the auroral record. The existence of secular variations in the auroral occurrence frequency has been known since the early 1700's, including the existence of a significant attenuation of auroral activity during...

Jupiter’s main auroral oval observed with HST-STIS

[1] An extended series of FUV images obtained on 7 days during winter 2000–2001, with fixed pointing, yielded highly accurate tracking of emisson features as Jupiter rotated. They provided newly detailed measurements of the degree of corotation of auroral emissions and their variations with changing central meridian longitude. This 2-month data set provides a statistical average location of the...

Luminosity variations in several parallel auroral arcs before auroral breakup

Variation of the luminosity in two parallel auroral arcs before auroral breakup has been studied by using digitised TV-data with high temporal and spatial resolution. The intervals when a new arc appears near already existing one were chosen for analysis. It is shown, for all cases, that the appearance of a new arc is accompanied by fading or disappearance of another arc. We have named these ev...

Magnetic local time variation and scaling of poleward auroral boundary dynamics

The balance of dayside and nightside reconnection processes within the Earth’s magnetosphere and its effect on the amount of open magnetic flux threading the ionosphere is well understood in terms of the expanding-contracting polar cap model. However, the nature and character of the consequential fluctuations in the polar cap boundary are poorly understood. By using the poleward auroral luminos...
